Formidable Woodblock Masterpieces Of Women By Utamaro

One of the most prominent themes in the arts of Man has always been female beauty. But surprisingly few artists are primarily identified with this theme. A major exeption is the Japanese artist Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) who dedicated is whole artistic life pursuing this beauty. He specialized in the posture, the character, the softness of the skin and the grace of the woman and fully utilized the characteristic of the woodblock to obtain the essence of female nature.

The following five bijin (beauty print) designs are among his most acclaimed masterpieces.

Mature Woman (c.1793)

From Utamaro’s five part series Kasen: ko no bu(Selected Love Poems) this okubi-e (bust portrait/ half length portrait) design is generally considered the best of this set of prints. The title in the English translation of this print is ‘Love Which One Can Not Put Out in One’s Mind’ and is the portrayal of a mature woman resting her head on her hand. Her eyebrows are shaven, which indicates she’s married, and her eyes are narrowed in a dreamily gaze looking into the distance. In this series Utamaro focuses on the facial expressions of these women using fine lines and soft delicate colors trying to expose their inner feelings.

Applying Red Lipstick (c.1794)

An ordinary woman depicted in a half-kneeling position looking in a mirror which she holds in her hand. She’s applying red lipstick to her mouth after she blackened her teeth. In this design Utamaro proofs his mastery in depicting women wearing everyday clothes placed in an ordinary setting. The subtle contrast between the red lipstick and the white of the skin is a magnificent detail. The black box in front of her contains implements for blackening the teeth.

Yamamba and Kintaro (c.1801)

Utamaro designed nearly fifty prints of the mountain woman Yamamba and her son Kintaro (a.k.a. Kintoki) in various settings and formats. This naga-oban (c. 20 3/4″ x 9 1/2″) design is Utamaro’s most well-known print depicting this subject. In this scene the viewer can feel true motherly love from Yamamba as she’s trying to calm the little boy with chestnuts while fondling him as he is holding on to her. The soft colour combination is beautifully contrasted with the strong colours used for Kintaro, emphasizing his health and strength.

Ten Physiognomical Studies (c.1791)

The following print is from Utamaro’s famous ‘Ten Physiognomical Studies of Women’ -series and is a study of a noble looking middle-aged woman reading a letter, with her hands outstretched to unfold it. A masterpiece because of its simplicity and superb composition. Some prints of this design have a pink-mica background instead of silver-mica. The pink was made after the silver.

Takashima Ohisa (c.1792)

This print belongs to the same series as the foregiving one and is probably the most celebrated single bijin portrait in the history of Ukiyo-e. The model of this print is thought to be a daughter of Takashima Chobei who was a proprietor of a tea-house in Ryogoku Yagenbori. The viewer can feel the sweetness of this girl who is a daughter of a well-to-do family. It seems that Utamaro often painted Takashima Ohisa (like many other contemporaries) by preference. He also painted Ohisa in the series ‘Six Famous Beautiful Women’, even after her marriage and as the proverb says: “Beauty is often inconsistent with luck”, this pretty Ohisa died young leaving two sons behind.

Beauty and the Epilator

As much as we want to deny it, we tend to make little judgments in our heads when we meet a person for the first time. This comes with the saying that first impression matters. And sure enough, it doesn’t stop at characteristics and manners of the individual but a little weight is given to beauty as well. Some may say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but then again, there comes that little voice in your head that throws a few remarks about the person’s looks as well.

You are indeed beautiful, despite color, size, shape and age. What matters is how you show it. Now, when I say beauty, I don’t mean the stuff that comes in compact cases tuck in vanity bags nor does it refer to palettes of eye shadow and tubes of lipstick. What I do mean is how you portray yourself to others. Sociologists often say that with enough zest and self confidence, an individual’s self esteem can fly through the roof if they believe that they can. When you feel pretty, you are pretty.

So do what makes you beautiful and show the world what you’re made of. You can start with the very basics of hair removal. Obviously we’re not talking about going bald, but when you want to slide on that pencil skirt for an interview or enjoy the sun and tan in your bikini on the beach, the epilator can be of great help to remove unwanted hairs from the body. Slather on some good moisturizer after and you will see that your smooth skin will give off that healthy glow making you look and feel better. Once you feel great, you would be able to carry yourself with charm, letting others see the beauty you bring as well. So, if you’re down in the dumps, a bored weekend or need a little perk for the day, get cracking on hair removal and look more beautiful today.

Obsession With Beauty Royal Beauty Tips

Obsession with beauty is not something new in todays world. It is as ancient as time. Human cult has been in touch with beauty enhancing body rituals since ages. From Cleopatras beauty rituals to the ancient Roman obsession of using oyster shell powder as a skin lightener to Egyptians obsession of alloy adornments; beauty rituals are prevalent through generations across the world and differ from cultures to geographies. The disparate beauty obsession is carried forward from generations through our ancestors.

The ancient Egyptians are known for their sinful beauty, exotic perfumes, aromatic oils, weird styles and dramatic hairstyles. The aristocracy devoted much time in maintaining their appearance with a sole notion of pleasing the Gods of their time. The pursuit of external godliness was beyond personal adornments. Archaeological revelations of the excavated tombs and mummies depict that ancient Egyptians prepared their bodies more for the life after death than the existing period. The legendry Cleopatra’s secrets of beauty for fair and impeccable complexion reveal that she took bath in milk and honey to cleanse her body as milk is a good moisturizer that softens the skin and regenerates fresh skin cells and honey acts as a bleaching agent. It was believed that donkeys milk served a great purpose in this beauty treatment and many famous beauties of ancient Egypt like Cleopatra, Nefertiti, and many others had herds of this breed to yield in their beauty rituals. New age beauty gurus have come up with numerous cosmetic products based on this formula.

In ancient days Roman woman used a cream of refined animal fat and ground oyster shell to protect their skin and to keep their completion fairer, and the Greeks used yogurt as a topical beauty treatment. Yogurt rich in lactose, proteins, vitamins, and minerals was applied on the skin to treat sunburn and protect moisturizing effect. Ancient Grecians and Romans had elaborate and vivacious hairstyles which they exhibited with vanity. Their elaborate hairdos determined and were usually appropriate to their age, socio-economic class and their marital status. They basked themselves with perfumes and ornaments to look beautiful. Their concern or coercion towards the metal adornments was based on the spiritual belief of an endowment bestowed to them by Gods.

Ancient Chinese women had their own interpretation of beauty and makeup techniques. The Royal queens and empress used a unique type of face powder made up of crushed pearls that were either consumed or applied topically to keep their skin younger looking and free from wrinkles. The amino acids, minerals, proteins, and calcium carbonate crystals of pearl powder worked miracles for aging skin. And the Empress Lu Zhi, who was famous for her beautiful skin used Tremella fuciformis, a type of mushroom known for its medicinal properties. Skin cream made of snow fungus distillate was used as exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin as it had extraordinary moisture retaining properties.

Time has nurtured our knowledge on beauty rituals. With the new-age cosmetics can decide and choose the right type of products as per our texture of the skin. There are many good local beauty tip shows aired on satellite channels and often I tout the best beauty tips and secrets from shows on my television connected to Dish TV. The present day beauty products that make you look younger and more beautiful are more or less an inspiration from the practices of the ancient royal natural remedies. If you go online and do some researches by turning over the pages of history for more details on ancient beauty techniques, you may ponder in your mind that you are in a society more focused on beauty than any other events in history and that we get naturally from our ancestors.

How Do I Refill A Post It Note Dispenser

Post-It notes play an important role in any office, for a wide variety of reasons:

They make excellent book marks, so that you can find interesting facts on pages easily

Useful for separating document segments

Offer instructions on files or documents that can be easily removed once the job has been done

Perfect for leaving notes for workmates

Their sticky backs mean that theyll stick to most basic areas of an office including desks, walls, message boards, PC monitors, mugs, doors etc. However, the lightness of the glue guarantees that once removed no residue is left behind to tarnish and/or damage office equipment.

So many office workers couldnt imagine life without the usefulness of the handy little post-it note, but keeping track of where theyre kept can become a bit of a chore, especially if you have several pads of them lying around your hectic desk. And even when you do find them, the chances that theyve become damaged and/or stained by a coffee mug, or some other office-based implement are annoyingly high. Nevertheless, the real solution to this is to purchase a good post-it note dispenser, which keeps them all neat, tidy and organised in a world of mayhem.

*Refilling your Dispenser*

Most Post It Note Dispensers come ready-filled with plenty of notes to keep you going for a considerable amount of time, but no matter whether you work in a really busy office or a quiet one, your notes are going to run out eventually. Thats just inevitable, but where do you even start to go about refilling your note-enriched beauty?

1. The first and most important step is to determine exactly what size of post it note your dispenser holds. You will first need to determine their shape, ie: square, rectangle, circular etc, and then work out their dimensions. This is pretty simple for square or rectangle-shaped notes, but circular may be more of a chore. To save on time, you should check the dispenser and any packaging that it came in, to see whether they offer you this information.

2. It is useful to have an idea of the type of post it notes that you prefer to use. If you tend to only use them as small page-markers, then smooth-surfaced ones are stronger and more durable, in the sense that they are less likely to tear. However, they are unsuitable for writing on. Therefore, if you tend to use post-its for writing notes either to yourself or your colleagues, then paper-based post-its are probably more suitable.

3. Once youve determined the type of post-it notes that you are looking for, shop around all of the stationery-based shops that you can think of, and find out if they supply post-it note refills. The chances are that if they sell the original dispenser that you bought, they are quite likely to also sell the refills.

4. Take time to compare and contrast prices, to make sure that you are getting the best deal possible.

5. Once you have purchased the correct refills, youll need to figure out (or find out) how many notes the dispenser can hold at one time. Its important not to insert too many, as you might have problems pulling sheets out.

6. Find out how the dispenser allows for refills. Some open up at the top, allowing you to simply pop them inside, whilst others can be inserted from a side-angle.

7. Take time to ensure that all of the sheets are inserted correctly, to avoid them becoming crumpled or jammed, and you are all set to go.

Strange Japanese Beauty Products

When it comes to innovation, nothing beats the Japanese. Our Asian friends often leave no stone unturned in their quest for beauty and perfection. Thats probably the reason why theyve come up with lots of unusual and sometimes silly inventions.

To give you an idea of what I mean, heres a brief overview of bizarre beauty products from the Land of the Rising Sun courtesy of UniqueDaily.com and 3yen.com. The products featured here are not guaranteed to work but I promise theyll give you plenty of laughs.

Are you bothered by the size of your nose? Many Japanese women are and want to do something about their small, flat noses. The Hana Hana Nose Stretcher will change all that.

This beauty accessory is nothing more than an industrial-strength clothespin. Wear it for just a few minutes for a couple of days and it will supposedly make your nose bigger and longer. The manufacturer claims it stretches the nose cartilage to give the user a beautiful and balanced face – whatever the heck that means! At less than $7, this natural nose lift is a real bargain. Perfect for those who are afraid of plastic surgery!

Fans of the ax-wielding maniac Jason Vorhees in the Friday the 13th film series can now look like their favorite horror icon with the Face Slimmer. In Japan, a slim face is a mark of beauty. Put on this rubber mask and it supposedly massages and melts away fat from your face. No batteries required.

The Head Bath Cap looks like it was made especially for Marquis de Sade, the French aristocrat and writer of violent pornography. Put the cap over your head and fill it with water. The trapped water is said to be good for the scalp and will help you grow thicker and fuller hair. Since the cap covers the entire face and only has one opening on top, dont wear it tightly or you could drown in the damned thing!

Want to look taller? Then the Neck Stretcher is for you! Just place this accordion-like device around your neck and fill it with air with the included hand pump. In minutes, it will stretch your neck and hopefully increase your height. Warning: overuse of this product can make you look like a giraffe!

The Slim Mouth Piece supposedly exercises the muscles around the mouth to help you lose fat. The manufacturer said it tones your face by expanding and contracting flaccid facial muscles. Use it for only 2-3 minutes a day to “sharpen your features.

Despite its misleading name, this gadget is supposed to make your mouth bigger, not smaller. Bigger? Yes, bigger. Who on earth would want this? Well, the theory is that if you widen your mouth, you will have the appearance of a small face, so prized by the Japanese, said an unnamed English teacher in Fungus Mungus Weird Stuff in Japan.

Exercising the mouth sounds like a good idea. But if you ask me, that area gets all the exercise it needs from smiling, talking and eating. Still, the Slim Mouth Piece would make a good conversation piece. Get yours for $9.50.

If youre looking for a natural way to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles without having to go through the pains of costly plastic surgery or cosmetic injections, dont waste time going to Japan. The solution is right here with the Rejuvinol AM/PM Botox Alternative Age-Defying System. This powerful anti-aging formula consists of the Rejuvinol morning moisturizer that nourishes and strengthens the skin; and the Rejuvox night cream that relaxes tense, tired facial muscles.
